Ife replica "Ife Terrakotte der Frobenius Expedition 1910"

Description: Replica of an Ife terracotta head; naturalistic face covered with incised striations, crown on head; stands on base with inscription on back "Ife Terrakotte der Frobenius Expedition 1910". Sticky label on base in Irma Stern's handwriting - her name and the number 32. Frobenius was a German ethnologist and archaeologist. From 1904 to World War 1 he undertook 6 expeditions to Africa. This replica commemorates his expedition to Nigeria in 1910. Ife art has been known to the world outside the ancient kingdom of Ife, Nigeria, since approximately 1910. In that year Leo Frobenius led an expedition to Nigeria, where he found the brass head of Olokun (the god of the ocean from the Yoruba pantheon), which was henceforth taken as a proof of the high standard of African art. As a result, both Western and Nigerian scholars developed a great interest in Ife brass, stone and terracotta objects. See website of the Frobenius Institute.
