Description: Small blue and white saucer-dish; provincial coarse porcelain, 'grove porseleinen' in Dutch; greyish body covered with greyish glaze; underglaze blue cobalt is blackish; small footrim. The design is a rendering of the symbol of the 'Three Eternal Friends' growing out from the Holy Mountain (the mountain Mehru is supposed to be risen out of the eternal waters). The design is enclosed within underglaze blue double rings. The exterior is painted with flying birds, schematic and quickly rendered. The symbol of the 'Three Eternal Friends' was very much favoured in Japan. The piece is probably made for export to Japan. South Chinese export ware to the Philippines, to the East Indian Archipelago etc. Probably made in Fukien province.
