Bowl Description: Small blue and white bowl; provincial coarse porcelain, 'grove porseleinen' in Dutch. Coarse greyish body; high footrim; outward curving lip; blackish grey cobalt design under a brilliant blueish glaze; design consists of crudely rendered depiction of the 'Three Eternal Friends', the pine (longevity), the bamboo (uprightness, honesty), and the prunus (the symbol of Confucius). 2 concentric circles surround interior base. The symbol of the 'Three Eternal Friends' has been favoured in Japan. This piece is probably made for export to Japan. South Chinese export ware to the Philippines, to the East Indian Archipelago. Probably made in the Fukien province.
