Artwork title:
Fragment, statuette of Krishna Description: Fragment of a terracotta statuette of Krishna - both legs missing; soft red pottery clay; body covered with light blue slip; shawl and hair ornament with white, red and brown slip; peach in his hand with yellow slip; glaze is worn off but remains of a thin yellow glaze are scattered on the back. Krishna is most probably depicted here in his youth, living with the shepherds and wearing their simple clothes. His Arian hairknot shows his high standing, and the peach in his hand symbolises eternity - he was a god. On 17th and 18th century Indian miniature paintings can be found the revival of the cult of Krishna, mainly with his erotic connotations. (Dr I Eckert).
