Statuette of Kwan Yin
Description: Enthroned statuette of Kwan Yin in position of meditation; both feet shown; her robe and especially her headgear show Mongol influence; the throne is a high, half rounded base with a coiling dragon of the vajra type; on carved wooden stand, probably a later addition. Chinese ware, 'enamelled on the bisquit'. Fine granulated grey clay, fired in high temperature kiln, partly covered with glazes derived from copper oxide; face and neck are not glazed; greater part of the statuette and the throne are covered with a shiny dark-turquoise glaze, but the folds of the garment are copper red; face, neck and other parts show traces of gilding which has worn away. British Antique Dealers Association label stuck on the back, as is a label on which is written Ming Dynasty 1368-1644.
